Steps had been taken to hold a disaster drill in view of the impending danger of floods and landslides in the Kalutara District, Kalutara Government Agent U.D.C. Jayalal said.

He said that the drill would be held in 50 Grama Niladhari areas in ten Divisions in the District from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 17 with the participation of the public.

He told a meeting at the Kalutara District Secretariat to create awareness among relevant officials that the object of the drill was to minimise the damage of a possible disaster. The drill would be monitored and coordinated by Additional GA Nilanka Wettasinghe from the District Secretariat.

The flood disaster drill would include evacuation of the affected people, providing them shelter and urgent facilities in safer locations and rushing the injured, if any, to hospitals.

The GA requested the public to have all important documents including deeds, educational certificates, currency notes, jewellery and other valuables in bags for safety in case of a disaster.

OIC of the District Disaster Management Center Col. P. Jayasinghe said the district had been divided into zones and linked to the security forces, the Police, the STF, and the Civil Security Department.

Chairmen of Matugama, Agalawatte, Walallavita, and Palindnuwara Pradeshiya Sabhas, Divisional Secretaries, Grama Niladharies, Samurdhi Development Officers, and Disaster Management Officers attended the meeting.
Meanwhile, torrential rains experienced in Kalutara District yesterday resulted in minor floods in several areas including Aluthgama and Beruwela.

The roads in the area had gone under water causing obstruction to traffic disrupting civilian life.
