Those who sell fertilizer above the stipulated price will immediately be taken into custody and their licenses will be cancelled, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera warned.

He said that a bag of fertilizer should be sold at the price of Rs.1,500.

The Minister has taken the decision to take stern actions against the unscrupulous traders in response to complaints directed to him by the representatives of several farmer organisations.

A bag of fertiliser is being sold at Rs.500 at the agrarian service centres while a maximum price of Rs.1,500 has been fixed for sale in the open market.

Minister Amaraweera has also instructed the representatives of farmer organisations and the agriculture officials to immediately report about the traders selling fertilizer for more than Rs.1,500.   Rs.32.5 billion has been allocated for fertilizer subsidy for this year, he said.   The Minister warned of stern action against traders who defy the government’s directions on the sale of fertilizer.
