Former Mount Lavinia Crimes OIC Tissa Sugathapala and former DIG Prasanna Nanayakkara, earlier remanded on charges of concealing evidence on the investigation into the killing of former Sunday Leader Editor Lasantha Wickrematunga, were yesterday re-remanded till May 25.

When the case was taken up before Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate Mohammed Mihail, Senior Counsel Rasika Weeratunga appearing for the second suspect Sugathapala informed Court that he would submit a bail application on behalf of his client on the next hearing date.  During the CID investigations into the killing of the newspaper editor, it had found several forged documents at Sugathapala’s residence.

Earlier the CID also informed Court that former DIG Nanayakkara had planned to destroy and conceal evidence in the case.

The detectives informed Court that according to Sugathapala’s statement he had been forced to hand over Lasantha Wickrematunga’s field book, which is considered to be the most crucial piece of evidence in the case, to former DIG Nanayakkara under severe pressure from former senior DIG Hemantha Adhikari.
