Referring to the Government’s decision to introduce a coupon system to supply kerosene to fishermen at a concessionary price, Former Deputy Minister Nimal Lanza said the fishing community does not want coupons or tokens but for Kerosene to be sold at the price it was sold earlier.

Addressing a news briefing, he said the fishing community was agitating against the high cost of Kerosene since the recent increase and that providing them with coupons was not practical and wouldn’t meet their expectations.
“The fishermen have to bear an additional cost to get Kerosene to use in their boats. Providing them with coupons is a poor substitute which does not suit the fishing community,” Lanza said.
“Even, the Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has stressed that the fishing community should be provided with kerosene at the previous price. Hence, the government should heed the concerns of the fishing community and make arrangements to provide Kerosene at the previous price, Lanza added.

He warned that if the government fails to provide the fishing community with Kerosene at the old price, fishing communities around Sri Lanka would abstain from going out to fish and carry out protests.
