SL to field 14 athletes at two major events

The Selection Committee of the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka (AASL) yesterday named a 14-member squad ahead of two international events to be held in Thailand and the Philippines later this year.


The Philippines Open Athletics Championship will be held from May 31 to June 4 in Manila. A total of four Men and two Women will represent Sri Lanka at this event. 


The Sri Lanka Men’s Team for this event will include Dilip Ruwan (400m), G. M. A Premakumara (400m), H. A. D. Hemanthakumara (1,500m) and Amila Jayasiri (long jump). 


The Sri Lanka Women’s Team for this event will include W. K. Nimali (800m) and Gayanthika Abeyrathne (800m).


Meanwhile, the Thai Open Athletics Championship will be held on July 4 and 5 in Bangkok. 


A total of four Men and four Women athletes will represent the country at this event. 


The Sri Lanka Men’s Team for this meet will include Santhush Weerasinghe (St. Benedict’s College – 200m), Nuwantha Senanayake (Isipathana College – 200m), D. M. Bogoda (Kurunegala DAA – 400m) and S. T. Amarasinghe (Royal College, Colombo – high jump). 


The Sri Lanka Women’s Team for this meet will include Shelinda Jansen (Gateway College, Rajagiriya – 200m), H. M. Chamini Herath (Walala A. Rathnayake NS -1,500m), Wasanthi Maristella (Kuliyapitiya MMV – 2000m steeplechase) and Wishmi Herath (Kuliyapitiya MMV – 2000m steeplechase).
