The parents of a two-year-old boy,  who was adopted, who was found dead in a home in a housing complex in Maligawatte, were arrested on Tuesday night, Police said.
The Maligawatte police launched a probe after they were informed that the boy had died under suspicious circumstances and that his parents had arranged for his funeral to take place on Monday (14) without a post-mortem examination being conducted.

The Police personnel who arrived at the home said that when they examined the child’s body they noticed burns on the left leg of the deceased.

Thereafter, they had informed the Hulftsdorp Magistrate about the suspicious circumstances surrounding the boy’s death.

Colombo JMO Channa Perera conducted the post-mortem examination into the death and according to the autopsy report, the child had died due to the multiple  injuries which were not caused by accident but due to cruelty.
The police arrested the parents of the child on murder charges.

According to the investigation, the woman had married twice earlier and has a 10-year-old girl from her second marriage and another 6-year-old girl from the current marriage.    Police said that the suspects were not the real parents of the deceased and they had adopted him from a Tamil couple in the Thotalanga area.   The Tamil couple had asked the woman, who was a neighbour at the time, to take care of their child because they were leaving the country for two years. The woman had taken the child from them and told them she would take care of him.   Police said the suspects had named the child Mohamed Ali Mohamed Usman and had adopted him without any legal documents or a birth certificate. The boy’s adopted mother had confessed to the police that she had beaten the boy on multiple occasions because her husband loved the boy more than her two girls.
The 29-year-old woman, Mohomad Fathima Mohamed Sifana and the man, 39-year-old Mohamed Ali Mohamed Usman, were to be produced in the Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s Court.
