The Public Services United Nurses’ Union (PSUNU) yesterday pledged support to trade union action by the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) against the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed with Singapore.
Accordingly, the GMOA will launch a countrywide 24-hour token strike today against the FTA signed with Singapore and the proposed Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) with India. PSUNU Chairman Ven. Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera said all attempts made by GMOA to defeat these initiatives were appreciated and that the FTA with Singapore would open the Sri Lankan job market to foreign countries limitlessly.
“The Yahapalana Government is all out to sell national assets and burden people with taxes. This FTA will risk the country’s future. The authorities have inked this agreement by concealing the truth to people. This will be worse than the 1815 agreement. As the FTA does not have an exit clause, Sri  Lanka will be under the control of Singapore. The authorities concerned should immediately revoke this agreement. The government should consider the people’s will before entering into such contracts. If not, we will be forced to resort to major trade union action,” he said.
