Two nabbed transporting 4,750 kilos of refuse tea

A stock of 4,750 kilos of suspected refuse tea was seized in transit and two suspects taken into custody by the Welamboda Police during a raid in the early hours of last morning at Manikkawa on the Gampola- Kadugajjawa road.   
Investigations revealed that the suspects were transporting the stock of refuse tea to Colombo for export and that a billionaire businessman was the king pin behind the racket which had been going on unchecked for a long time.   
Police said they recovered 139 bags of  refuse tea  labelled as Sri Lanka tea and bearing the Sri Lanka Standard Certificate. A senior police official said the suspects had been carrying on the contraband trade of exporting  refuse tea  under the forged SLS certificate. He said legal action would be taken against the suspect after receiving the Sri Lanka Tea Board report and that the businessman suspected for the racket would be questioned.  Under interrogation the suspects stated that the stock of tea was valued at Rs.1.3 million.  OIC Crime Investigation Branch SI Manjula Senaratne, PC 88805 Madusanka, and 19607 Buddhika carried out the raid on the instructions of OIC Welamboda Police IP Shantha Bandara.
