‘Methsanda Sevana’ Housing Scheme to be vested with public today

The Megapolis and Western Development Ministry would be embarking on an ambitious plan to develop five suburbs in Colombo, including Pearl City and as part of this commitment 722 houses at the ‘Methsanda Sevana’ Housing Scheme will be vested with the public today (23) at a ceremony to be graced by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Minister Champika Ranawaka said.   
Minister Ranawaka added that the programme had been launched under the Urban revival project ‘Life instead of a house’, with the aim of providing houses with modern facilities to low income families in the Colombo City in order to uplift their living standards.   

Accordingly, the Urban Development Authority (UDA) will commence this project to construct 50,000 houses for low income families.  

Minister Ranawaka told the media at the UDA auditorium that the UDA had successfully constructed 2,270 housing units in 2017-2018 at a cost of Rs. 9,080 million and vested them with the public. “Arrangements have been made to hand over another 8,903 housing units during 2018-2019. The investment for this project borne by the UDA is Rs, 44, 515 million. Further, an additional 9,904 housing units are currently under construction at a total cost of Rs. 49,520 million. The cost per two-bedroomed unit including basic facilities and service amenities is around Rs. 4-5 million. As common amenities the housing projects would include lifts, community centres, pre-schools with streamlined garbage disposal facilities,” Minister Ranawaka stressed.   

The UDA had invested Rs. 44,515 million and Rs. 49,520 million from 2016 to 2018 to construct 8,903 and 9,904 housing units respectively. Housing projects thus completed are: Muwadora Uyana (Fergusan Road), Siyasetha Sevana (Pradeepa Mawatha), Jayamaga Sevana (Mahawatta), Lakhiru Sevana (Maligawatte), Methsanda Sevana (Henamulla), Laksanda Sevana (Kolonnawa) and Laksetha Sevana (Maligawatta).   
Housing projects to be vested with the public in 2018/19 are, Siyapath Sevana (Dematagoda)Methsanda Sevana (Henamulla)Siyapath Sevana (Dematagoda)Angoda/Mattakkuliya-1and 2Aluth Mawatha-1 and 2, Maligawatta /Kollonnawa, Colambage Mawatha, Colombo – 5, Kalinga Mawatha, Torrington Avenue and Kimbula Ela and  Bloemendhal Road.  

The UDA will take measures to provide the recipients of these new homes all the amenities for the commencement of a new life, under the directive of Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka.   

‘Nena Diriya’ was aimed at uplifting the educational standards of the children living in these housing projects. Accordingly, classes will also be held to provide the students year five scholarship examination classes and conferences, English, Mathematics, Science and Information Communication Technology   

Through the ‘Ridma Seriya’ initiative, the talents and capabilities of the younger generation and youth would be identified and a stage would be provided for them to showcase their talents and abilities, Minister Ranawaka emphasized.
