Aloysius gave me Rs. 100,000

  • We cannot reject such offers in politics as we may make political rivals if we do

Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka who admitted to having received Rs.100,000 from Perpetual Treasuries Ltd (PTL) owner Arjun Aloysius for his election campaign said yesterday he could pay it back with interest if necessary.

He told the media outside the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute that it was a normal practice for businessmen to contribute towards election campaigns.    “No one can say I swindled Rs.100,000 from the bond scam. Businessmen contribute for election campaigns and we use them as petty cash for day-to-day activities. I have nothing to conceal. At times, politicians seek funds for campaigns. It doesn’t amount to bribery. I contributed Rs.600,000 for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s election campaign in 2005 when Gotabaya Rajapaksa appealed to me. This happens in every country. Those who contribute may expect some benefit, but I am not a person who will resort to illegal practices expecting some kind of returns. We cannot reject such offers in politics as we may make political rivals if we do,” the minister said.
