Estate Trade Unions and Plantation Companies would engage in negotiations in October on increasing salaries of over 200,000 plantation workers, Minister of Hill Country New Villages Palani Thigambaram said.
“The demand made last year to increase the daily wage of Rs.750 to Rs.1, 000 remains unfulfilled,” he said.

The workers are still paid Rs. 750 a day.

“Therefore, new moves to get this salary increase will be forwarded for discussion in October under the terms of an agreement between the trade unions and the plantation companies,” the Minister said.

“To give a salary increase to the workers is feasible for the companies as tea fetched a higher price in the world market now,” he said.
