A sum of Rs. 33 billion had been allocated for fertilizer subsidy this year, Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera said.

“Two hundred thousand (200, 000) acres of paddy cultivation has been planned for the year and with rainfall received this acreage is expected to increase by another 150, 000 acres,” he said.

“Funds for fertilizer subsidy for the additional paddy cultivation may be sought from a supplementary estimate,” the Minister said.

“The supply of fertilizer had been suspended by the companies due to unsettled bills amounting to Rs.4.8 billion during the previous Government.

“However Rs.3.6 billion of these debts were settled by the present Government and now these companies are willing to supply fertilizer to the Government,” Minister Amaraweera said.
