Four suspects including the chairman and a member of the Talawakele-Lindula Urban Council were arrested on charges of kidnapping a 5-year-old-girl in 2017, the Nuwara Eliya Police said.

They said the arrests were made on Sunday after a complaint was received that the girl residing at  Portmore Estate in Agarapatana was kidnapped last year and sold.

The investigations revealed that the girl had been sold to a couple, who were looking for a little girl to be adopted without the consent of the child’s parents.

Police said UC Chairman Anagipura Ashoka Sepala, councillor Ishara Anuruddha Manchanayake and the other two suspects would be produced in the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court within the next few days.
