The joint opposition (JO) said yesterday that having a Speaker and a Deputy Speaker from the same political party and  in this case the United National Party, was a violation of the national government concept.  JO MP Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said the basic agreement with the national government was to appoint the Speaker from the UNP and the Deputy Speaker from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).   “Today it has changed. Therefore, we request the government to remove the national government label because there is no such thing today. Today, the SLFP ministers had become stakeholders of the UNP,” he told a news briefing. MP C.B. Ratnayake said some JO backbench MPs didn’t vote in favour of MP Sudarshini Fernandopulle because the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MPs left Chambers at voting time.

“Some of our MPs abstained from voting because the TNA and the JVP left without voting. The TNA is simply fulfilling the requirements of the UNP,” he said.
