Calling the proposed 20th amendment to the Constitution an attempt to lead the country towards anarchy, MP Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena asked the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leadership to withdraw the amendment immediately.

Addressing a news conference yesterday, he recalled that the 19th Amendment to the Constitution had been detrimental to the future of the country and warned the same could be said of the 20th Amendment as well.
“We now regret voting in favour of the 19th amendment which diluted the powers of the President. However, we will not make the same mistake with the 20th Amendment which would further weaken the executive powers of the President,” Yapa said. “The Local Government institutions would also suffer if 20A is passed.

According to the new amendment, the President can’t sit at a Cabinet meeting whereas the Prime Minister would get that opportunity. These types of things would surely result in a crisis being created. Hence, we urged the JVP to withdraw the proposal for the 20th Amendment,” Yapa Abeywardena added.

Meanwhile, Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, who also spoke, invited the rest of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) MPs to quit the unity government and join them.

“President Maithripala Sirisena also said at the SLFP Central Committee meeting that it is time for them to leave the unity government and form a SLFP Government. Thus, the remaining 23 SLFP members should leave the coalition government and work hand-in-hand with us to help form a SLFP Government,” he said.
