The flydubai Airlines, the only international airline which operated at the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA), had ceased its operations at the airport with effect from yesterday, citing ‘uneconomical’ outcomes, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said.

CAA Chairman Ananda Wimalasena told the Daily Mirror that the airline had made the request two weeks ago.

“They said their operations at MRIA are uneconomical and also complained about one or two bird strikes,” he said.

Meanwhile, a Spokesperson for the Airport said the Flydubai flight arrived at the airport daily in the morning until Thursday.

He said about 50 passengers passed through the airport daily.

“Tourists use this airport to visit Yala, Ampara, Pottuvil and Akkaraipattu. Local business people from Matara, Galle and Weligama and Sri Lankan employees in Dubai also go through the MRIA,” he said.

However, MRIA Manager Upul Kalansuriya said he had not yet been informed about the decision in writing.
