National Intellectual Sangha Council yesterday requested President Maithripala Sirisena to grant presidential amnesty to Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera who had been imprisoned by the Homagama magistrate.

Gen. Secretary of the organization Ven. Suriyawewa Sumedha Thera said the real culprits responsible for Eknaligoda killing should be brought to book just as the Ven.Thera was imprisoned. He pointed out that it was unjustifiable to compel the Ven. Thera to put off the robes and to be dressed as an ordinary prisoner. The Intellectual Sangha Council said that a decision to disrobe a Buddhist monk could be taken by a Sanghadikarana.

Meanwhile, the Mahasangha in several areas yesterday staged a protest against the imprisonment of Bodu Bala Sena leader Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera and demanded the immediate
release of the Ven.Thera.

The protest in front of the Buthkiriyagola temple in Monaragala had been organised by the Chief Incumbent of the Dambagolla Sri Wardanaramaya Ven. Kandaudapanguwe Sugathananda Thera. The Mahasangha in the Monaragala District participated.

The Mahasangha who staged the protest in front of the Padukka Bodi requested President Maithripala Sirisena to release the the Thera. They were of opinion that the offence committed by the Ven.Thera was not so serious as to sentence him to imprisonment.

The Mahasangha in Badulla area staged a walk demanding immediate steps to protect the rights of Ven. Gnanasara Thera as a Buddhist monk. The protest was organised by the Badulla Sasanarakshaka Balamandalaya. They marched from Badulla junction to the Muthiyangana Temple and staged the protest after attending religious observances.
