Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna(SLPP) is to raise the issue of the opposition leader’s post in the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), when the council meets today, SLPP Member of CMC Sharmila Gonawala told Daily Mirror.
Ms. Gonawala in a letter addressed to the Mayor requested  that SLPP Member Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam should be appointed as the Leader of Opposition in the CMC.

“During the last so many years the leader of the opposition had been appointed from the single party that has the most number of municipal councilors and in the last three months we have on many occasions requested to officially accept our nominee Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam and to grant us the facilities that the previous opposition was provided. We were made to understand by certain members of the ruling party that it is the Mayor that does not agree with the appointment of Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam as the opposition leader and that we (SLPP) should nominate another who is acceptable to the Mayor. I strongly believe that it is not the mandate of the ruling party to decide on the appointment of the opposition leader. Referring to the history of the council it has also been the accepted practice that one or two slots in the finance committee has been given to the opposition parties, which is not happening at present, and denying to accept and provide basic facilities to the opposition is undemocratic and amounts to doing injustice to the rate payers,” Ms Gonawala said in her letter addressed to Mayor.   However Ms. Senanayake is of the opinion that relevant members of the Council should decide on the matter as it is not something for her to decide.

It was also reported that UPFA member Asath Sally had obtained the consent of opposition members to accept him as the leader of opposition. However members of the Tamil Progressive Alliance which is led by Minister Mano Ganesan who pledged their support to Mr. Sally had later changed their stance as they decided to back the ruling party.
