In reference to the statement made by Ven. Vendaruwe Upali Thera that Gotabaya Rajapaksa should rule this country even militarily, the National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Wimal Weerawansa said it was necessary to properly understand the allusion of the statement.

The Anunayake of the Asgiriya Chapter was speaking on the occasion of an almsgiving, marking the 69th birthday of Gotabaya Rajapaksa when he said so.

Weerawansa said in a press release that what the Thera meant was not to follow the footsteps of Hitler but to be a straightforward leader, who was capable of recovering the
country from this peril.

“Some Politicians, like Mangala Samaraweera, are attempting to create a false interpretation to the people that what Upali Thera had conveyed in and through his deliverance, was absolutely serious and controversial,” Weerawansa said.

“The Thera spoke on behalf of every citizen of this country, who is in utter despondency because of the way how this country is run by this Government,” Weerawansa added.

He said a leader like Gotabaya should come to office in order to protect the country from the prevailing catastrophe in terms of politics, economy and society.
