Chairman of the Elections Commission (EC) Mahinda Deshapriya is to meet Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today (28) for a special discussion with regards to the Provincial Council Election.

Mr. Deshapriya is to request the Speaker not to allow the Provincial Council Elections to be delayed further and to help remove all legal impediments to elections being held as soon as possible, it is learnt.

The reason for the discussion was the fact that although a year had passed since the tenure three Provincial Councils, Sabaragamuwa, North Central and Eastern had lapsed elections had not been held since the PCs lapsed last September.

additionally, it was noted that the term of office of three more Provincial Councils, Central, North-Western and Northern Provinces would also end this coming September.

If the election is to be held under the previous system, it is necessary to amend the Provincial Councils Act while a decision to hold it that has already passed and if it holds under the newly introduced first past the post system the delimitation report which has already been submitted to Parliament needed to be approved. Whatever the government decides to do the EC would ask the Speaker to quickly give a ruling so that the polls that have been delayed could be held as soon as possible.

Officials of the Elections Commission and the Department of Elections would be present for the discussion held between the Speaker and the Chairman of the Elections Commission today.
