A Light Railway System is to be established along the 120 bus route in a bid to reduce the traffic congestion and travel time to Colombo, the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development said.
Speaking at an event, subject Minister Champika Ranawaka stated that the route was heavily congested with thousands of motorists using the road each day.

“Taking into consideration the difficulty, the public faces, we have decided to establish the light railway system, which would ensure a shorter travel time to Colombo,” he said.

He was speaking at the opening ceremony of a park for children with special needs in Boralesgamuwa.

The project is a part of the larger Weras Ganga stormwater and environmental development project.

“Keli Madala, the first of its kind would be a haven for children with special needs, who made up one per cent of the population in Colombo and its suburbs.

“We need to make a special place for such children and we hope to make another park in the Kottawa area,” the Minister said.

The Minister said that prime land in the city was often given away freely to private entities under the previous regime.

“We have made sure not to do the same. The projects that we started are sustainable, we will not force these projects on the public instead we will ensure that they are done with the participation and the will of the people,” he said.
