The Chief Adhikarana Sanghanayake of the Ruhunu – Magam Pattu and Chief Incumbent of the Kataragama Abhinawarama Temple Ven. Kapugama Sri Saranatissa Thera said it was a waste of time to attend meetings to organize the Kataragama festival, unless steps were taken to clean the town before the festival. The Kataragama festival will commence on July 13 and end after the water cutting ceremony on July 28.

During a meeting convened by the Moneragala Government Agent (GA) D.A. Pathmakulasuriya to organise the Kataragama Esala festival, the Thera complained that the bank of the Menikganga had become an eyesore due to haphazard dumping of garbage.  The GA instructed the officers of the Kataragama Pradeshiya Sabha to organize a Shramadana campaign and to deploy additional labourers to clean the town, while commenting that the Wildlife Conservation Department had a major role to play, during the festival. She said the pilgrims would face serious danger due to the wild elephants from Yala national park roaming into the Kataragama-Buttala road which was a main route taken by pilgrims. She instructed the Assistant Director of the Kataragama Wildlife Conservation Department to provide protection to the “Pada Yatra” pilgrims from the North and East, and Nuwara Eliya.
