Roy de Silva passes away Funeral at Borella General Cemetery today

  MB-9-1Veteran actor, director, producer, scriptwriter and playback singer Roy de Silva who had mesmerized the cine world for 55 years, passed away late on Saturday following a sudden illness. Born in Yatawatte, Matale on August 30, 1937, Roy was to be felicitated at a mega ceremony next month to coincide with his birthday. But he was snatched away weeks prior to the event he was so enthusiastic about.

Chakuratha Devadithya Gardiyawasam Lindamulage Roy Aloysius Felix de Silva who was better known by his screen name Roy de Silva, studied at Matale Yatawatte Vidyalaya, St. Sebastin’s Moratuwa and St. Joseph’s College, Colombo 10.

Roy made his debut as an actor in ‘Sujage Rahasa’ playing the son of Jeevarani Kurukulasuriya and Ravindra Rupasena. Interestingly, he acted as Jeevarani’s lover a couple of films later. Prior to this he had also acted as the main hero in a 16-mm film called ‘Senasuma’ in 1963.

Sujage Rahasa was Sinhala cinema’s 106th film (106 summing up to 7) and it was a super box office hit. Roy was thus known as a ‘Lucky actor’ as most of his films did extremely well at the box office.
Then he started writing scripts and directing movies. As a director he made 37 films and most of them were huge box office hits.

He also made Sri Lanka’s first English movie ‘It’s A Matter of Time’ featuring Gamini Fonseka, Rosy Senanayake, Sangeetha Weeraratne, Kamal Addaraarachchi and others. He recently screened its second part titled ‘It’s a Matter of Love’.


Remains now lie at the Jayaratne Parlour, Borella. Funeral will take place at 1.30 pm today at the Borella  Kanatte

He met his life partner Sumana Amarasinghe while working in ‘Hathara Peraliya’ and they both together made significant contributions to the Sinhala cinema.

Roy who was bestowed with several awards including the Sarasaviya, Rana Thisara, Presidential, Swarna Sinha, Sumathi, SIGNIS and other international awards.

Besides acting, he also contributed as playback singer in movies like Tom Pachaya, Minisun Athara Miniseka and Pethi Gomara.

Having started off as the screen lover of Sandhya Kumari, Roy romanced several actresses on screen and among them were Jeevarani Kurukulasuriya, Vijitha Mallika, Sriyani Amarasena, Geetha Kumarasinghe, Malani Fonseka, Nita Fernando, Sriyani Fonseka, Jenita Samaraweera, Janaki and Shirani Kurukulasuriya, Kanthi Lanka and Sumana Amarasinghe who became his real life partner too.
