In what could signal his entry into active politics, former defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa is expected to visit Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) head office in Battaramulla accompanied by former president Mahinda Rajapaksa and former minister Basil Rajapaksa, a party official said yesterday.

SLPP chairman G.L. Peiris told a news conference the visit was to acquaint himself with the party set-up.

He said he would not be in the country on that occasion because of a prior engagement and pointed out that there was a total breakdown in the country and the government was engaged in various moves to distract the people’s attention over the existing issues.

“Its latest ploy is to create dissension within the Rajapaksa family. There is no issue. The name people have in their minds is Mahinda Rajapaksa. But there is a legal bar which prevents him from contesting because of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. The joint opposition has agreed to support the person nominated by him,” Prof. Peiris said.

He said there had been 1,260 robberies, 734 rape cases and 214 killing in the country during the first five months of this year.
