Elections to all provincial councils including those in the North and the East can be held early next year if parliamentarians take an interest in passing relevant legislation, Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said yesterday.
Addressing a public awareness programme in Rattota to mark the Voters’ Day, Mr. Deshapriya said the Elections Commission was not in a position to hold provincial council elections due to the delay in passing relevant legislation.
“I am hopeful that the government will show a positive response to this need. During a meeting with the Speaker and the subject minister, we were told the relevant legislation would be passed in consultation with the leaders of political parties. If this materialises, the Elections Commission is prepared to hold elections to the six provincial councils in January 2019,” he said.
