The silence observed by Home Affairs Minister Vajira Abeywardena and Foreign Affairs Minister Tilak Marapana signifies that the UNP is in agreement with State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran’s statement that there was a huge need of LTTE reorganisation in the North and the East, said Mawbima Wenuwen Ranawiruwo Convener Major Ajith Prasanna (AAL).

He told a news briefing that the two ministers were present when the controversial statement was made at an event held recently in Jaffna.

“These two prominent ministers have co-sponsored the statement by keeping mum on the issue. This reflects the stance of the UNP. According to Article 3 of the 6th Amendment to the Constitution, no person shall directly or indirectly, in or outside the country, support, espouse, promote, finance, encourage or advocate the establishment of a separate State within the territory  of Sri Lanka.

Any person, who acts in contravention of the provisions in paragraph (1) of Article 3 shall, on conviction by the Court of Appeal, after trial on indictment and according to such procedure as may be prescribed by law, be subject to civic disability for such period not exceeding seven years as may be determined by court. Hence, Vijayakala Maheswaran and the two ministers concerned should face the penalties of violating the law,” Major Prasanna said.
