Discussions got underway with the Indian government to set up a joint venture to run the Mattala International Airport (MIA), State Minister of Transport and Aviation Ashok Abeysinghe told Parliament yesterday.

The State Minister was responding to an oral question raised by joint opposition MP Indika Anurudha in the House last evening.

“We have no intention of selling the airport in Mattala but will only opt for a joint venture with the Indian government,” he said.

He said the objective of this exercise is to turn the Mattala Airport into a profit making entity as the airport was running at a loss at present.
