The government should maintain the 25% quota for female representation at the upcoming Provincial Council elections, UPFA MP and former Deputy Minister Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopulle said on Monday.

She expressed these views during a seminar jointly organised by the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus and international non-profit organisation, Search for Common Ground.

“With women representation being made compulsory, women’s participation was brought to light at the local government elections. We are happy that the government decided to increase female representation at LG bodies. But we want it to expand. We want female representation in every governmental institution,” she said.

Meanwhile, MP Dr. Thusitha Wijemanna said basic paper qualifications should be made compulsory for parliamentary candidates as having a sound education was vital in politics.
