CCTV footage leads to arrest of gang in Athurugiriya motorcycle heist

d gang, wanted in connection with the robbery of motorcycles, was taken into custody by the Athurugiriya Police yesterday. Police said the suspects had waylaid several motorcyclists and stolen their vehicles at gunpoint. 
In the latest incident, the gangsters had robbed a soldier of his motorcycle at Panagoda in Athurugiriya after forcing him to kneel down. They had then used the stolen bike to reach Embulgama in Panagoda from where they robbed two more motorcycles. Athurugiriya Police that initiated investigations identified the suspects using CCTV recordings in the area. 

Police seized three stolen motorcycles including that of the soldier from a house in Hanwella. They also recovered weapons including a sword and a revolver of foreign make that had been locally-modified to support 9mm cartridges.   
Under interrogation, the suspects revealed to have been plotting a murder and a robbery at the instigation of ‘Dedigamuwe Chaminda,’ a close confidante of underworld figure ‘Samayan’ who was killed in a police shooting.
