Fruit traders of Manning Market in Pettah, Colombo vowed not to use chemicals for ripening their fruit after they were briefed about its effects on public health, it is learnt.

Senior lecturer of Rajarata Medical Faculty Prof. Channa Jayasumana said it was a great meritorious deed that these vendors decided to do away with the use of chemicals for fruit ripening. Instead, he said the vendors would resort to traditional methods of fruit ripening here.

“This is a good example. Consumers will approach you for quality fruits ripened through a natural process,” he said.

He said the vendors would use traditional methods such as smoking for ripening of fruits such as banana, papaw and mangoes.
