The 16 members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), who left the coalition government, are urging the remaining members of the party to join the opposition, but this request was turned down by us, Minister Wijith Wijayamuni Zoysa said.

The minister made this assertion at the opening of the new Sanghawasa at Pothubandana Temple in Bibile on Saturday evening.

“The 16 members who left the government are urging us to join the opposition but we have rejected this request. Our intention is to continue with the unity government. The unity government has to continue for the sake of the country. I guarantee that the next government will also be a UNP- SLFP coalition,” Minister Zoysa said.

“There was a move to get rid of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe but it was we who protected him,” he said.

Meanwhile he said an effort was made to invite President Maithripala Sirisena to participate in the event at Pothubandana Temple but it was not possible.

The minister explained that prelates in Uva had made some demands and what they had meant was that there was more work that needed to be done in the area. “Surely the prelates would have asked us to do something more as we have carried out development work in the area. Those who want to capture power in the future might visit this temple in the coming days. We do not mind this, they can visit this temple if they want, but please remember that this government that has done some development work in this area,” the Minister added.
