While stating that the Joint Opposition had decided to function independently in Parliament, it yesterday said a new political alliance would be formed named Ekabaddha Podujana Peramuna in future with the collaboration of all political allies of the Joint Opposition.

Joint Opposition MP Dullas Alahapperuma told a news conference that the party leaders headed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa who met on Tuesday in Colombo had unanimously taken this decision.

MP Alahapperuma said a broad political alliance would be formed and that discussions on it would commence next week.

“All the party leaders have decided to form a new political alliance and the Flower Bud will continue to be the alliance’s symbol. The members of the alliance will be decided following the upcoming discussions on the matter,” he said.
“However, we have still not decided on a common candidate for Presidential Election. There can be contradictory views. At the end of the day, former President Rajapaksa is our leader and we are ready to accept whatever he decides,” he added.

Meanwhile, he said the party leaders had also decided that the Joint Opposition would function as an independent political party in Parliament and added that they had been currently deprived of many Parliamentary Privileges.
He said the Joint Opposition was only getting a very limited time to speak in Parliament and added that they had informed Speaker Karu Jayasuriya of these issues on several instances.

“We are deprived of being the official Opposition in Parliament despite having a large number of Parliamentarians at our side. We waited for three years with patience, upholding democracy,” he said.

“Young Parliamentarians of the Joint Opposition will launch series of protest campaigns across the country in August in order to take the initiative to topple the Government,” he added.
