Cabinet approval was granted to procure locomotives to transport solid waste from Kelaniya to Aruwakkalu, Puttalam.

The management of solid waste collected in urban areas, especially in Colombo and its suburbs, has become a major issues faced by residents and local government officials charged with disposing garbage.
The sanitary landfill that is being constructed in Arwakkalu, despite numerous issues faced during the initial phase of the project, is on the verge of completion.

The project will also establish necessary infrastructure to transport waste transferred from Kelaniya to Aruwakkalu.

Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Champika Ranawaka, proposed that a sum of USD 8.27 million be allocated to purchase 4 railway engines, 34 container carrier wagons and 94 container boxes.  While, waste to incineration plants are being constructed, waste collected in Colombo and other areas will be disposed of in the sanitary land fill that is being established in Aruwakkalu, Puttalam as well as the waste management park established by the SLLRDC in Muthurajawela.

The site at Aruwakkalu is later to be used as a dumping site for ash produced by the plants during the incineration projects.
