Former minister and SLFP MP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said yesterday the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed between Sri Lanka and Singapore would bring long term consequences than any positive effects.

He told parliament that they were not against FTAs signed with foreign countries but it was a threat to the country for having exposed the service sector in the country excessively through this agreement.

Speaking during the adjournment debate on the Singapore FTA, he said the Sri Lankan panel which mediated to draft the agreement did not have expertise knowledge and added that they should take the responsibility on the shortcomings and defects of the FTA.

He said even though the government expected to sign several FTAs with other countries in the future, it would not be possible because of this agreement.

“According to this FTA, Sri Lanka would not get an opportunity to sign agreements with other countries which would be more beneficial to us. If a more beneficial agreement was signed with another country, we will have to give such benefits to Singapore as well;” he said.
