A lorry veered off the road and fell into Jayaganga Canal in Kumaraeliya in Thalawa after it was being pushed by a wild elephant, the Police said.

The driver of the lorry, however, had managed to escape unhurt.

He told the Police that when he noticed the jumbo standing on the road he had stopped the lorry and moved away from it.

The elephant then had approached the vehicle and pushed it into the canal.

Meanwhile, residents said the rogue elephant was frequenting the Mahaweli villages in Thalawa and that they were living in constant fear and urged the Wildlife Conservation authorities to help them.
