Main factors affecting them: Sea erosion, No deep sea fishing equipment and boulders blocking the entrance of harbours

Traditional Fisher folk in the coastal belt from Mount Lavinia to Moratu-Modara are in a predicament due to a series of issues affecting them that hampered their profession. They said that their representations in this regard to successive governments for more than 40 years had fallen on deaf ears and that they would be compelled to leave fishery to make a living as manual labourer.

Several issues faced by the fishermen are sea erosion along the coastal belt from Dehiwela to Wellawatta, many are losing their livelihood as they cannot afford to go fishing any more as many do not have deep sea fishing equipment and other environmental issues such as boulders blocking the entrance of harbours were some of the issues faced by these fishermen.
