The Joint Opposition (JO) yesterday urged President Maithripala Sirisena to convene a forum with them over the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Singapore.

JO MP Bandula Gunawardana said they simply have to ask two questions about the FTA from the President.

“We want to ask whether the President will accept the New Trade Policy, based on which the FTA was drafted, as the government’s policy and whether he would implement the FTA,” he told a news briefing.

Meanwhile, he said it appears Development Strategies and International Trade Minister Malik Samarawickrama has been fed with misinformation about the Singapore FTA by some elements.

“A state newspaper once reported quoting Minister Samarawickrama that already USD 16 billion had been flowed into the country as a result of the FTA. I highlighted this news at a recent news briefing. Today, the minister contradicts the previous news. He has said that the reports of USD 16 billion flowing into the country from the FTA, are false,” Dr. Gunawardana said.
