JO to take mangala to court over false claims

The Economic Research Unit of the Joint Opposition said it had decided to take legal action against Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera with regard to the alleged misuse of public funds.   


MP Bandula Gunawardena of the Unit said that they were going to take legal action for spending Rupees 8.5 m for the publicity of false information to the people, regarding oil price during former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s regime.   


He said that the Ministry of Finance had taken steps to spread false information to the general public on various matters, including that the price of a litre of kerosene was Rs. 106 during the previous regime, whereas it was in fact Rs. 81.   


He said that it was not appropriate for the Minister to sling mud using public funds.   


He said that legal action would be taken against the Minister of Finance and relevant officials of the Ministry and that he would request the court to take action to recover the alleged misused amount from the Minister and the relevant officials.
