There is the danger of this government delaying the general election by using similar tactics it is using to delay provincial council elections, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Chairman G.L. Peiris said yesterday.
He said the tenure of six out of nine provincial councils would be non-functional by the end of this year but the government was showing no interest in holding the PC elections.

“The government came up with a new PC electoral system only to abandon the process halfway without fully enacting it.

For the parliamentary election, the government may use the same method. It will say the existing preferential electoral system is flawed and therefore, it needs to be changed.

The government will propose a new system and halfway, will allow it to collapse,” Prof. Peiris told a news briefing.

He said according to the Elections Commission (EC) the matter of holding PC elections is now in Courts and in Parliament. He said the EC lacked the political will to hold the PC poll and had nothing to do with legal issues.

“According to the Interpretation Ordinance, the old law applies when a new law has not been implemented”.
