Sri Lanka edged-out South Africa by three runs on the Duckworth and Lewis scoring method in the rain-curtailed fourth ODI worked off at the Pallekele Stadium in Kandy yesterday.

South Africa were restricted to 187 for nine wickets after they were set a revised victory target of 191 runs from 21 overs.

South Africa were cruising along towards their target at one stage following some excellent batting from the top order and looked like extending their lead in the five-match series to 4-0.

However, Sri Lanka came back strongly during the latter stages with a tremendous performance on the field.

Suranga Lakmal bowled an outstanding last over and finished with three wickets while Thisara Perera captured two wickets. Earlier, Sri Lanka put forth their best batting display in the five-match series so far, as they posted 306 for seven in their allocated 39 overs after rain played spoilsport on more than one occasion.

54895A steady opening stand was followed by swashbuckling fifties from Kusal Perera (51), Thisara Perera (51 n.o) and Dasun Shanaka (65) to see the hosts through to a daunting total in a curtailed match. Wickets fell in clumps but with every incoming batsman hitting the road running, Sri Lanka never lost sight of a competitive total.

South Africa of course got the desired result at the toss when they won it and opted to field first under cloudy skies.

Dasun Shanaka and Thisara Perera went after the bowling to hit four sixes and four fours, providing the perfect final flourish for the innings.

Shanaka, with a six off the 30th ball he was facing, raised his maiden ODI fifty. Thisara Perera got to his milestone in the final over, off 44 balls.

Shanaka (65) fell with three balls to spare but the job was done as the hosts set a daunting target ahead of the Proteas.
