Nearly 15 female inmates of the Welikada prison climbed the prison roof yesterday to register their protest against the long delays in concluding court cases, Police said.

But Justice and Prison Reforms Minister Thalatha Atukorale said that they could not expedite the proceedings on the basis of their protest.

We have given the freedom to protest in whichever way they like. But we can’t fast-track the proceedings. I have given instructions to the Welikada Prison Superintendent regarding the matter

“We have given the freedom to protest in whichever way they like. But we can’t fast-track the proceedings. I have given instructions to the Welikada Prison Superintendent regarding the matter,” she said at function in Ratnapura.

When asked whether she had instructed Prisons Spokesman and Prisons Commissioner not to issue media statements, the minister said yes. “I informed them to obtain written approval from either me or from the ministry secretary prior to speaking to the media. The Prisons Department is not a place which can be operated by talking to the media,” she said.
