Esala Perahera sets off from Sri Dalada Maligawa tonight

Kandy Esala Perahera festival will commence tonight with the first Kumbal Perahera parading the streets. The procession will set off from the Sri Dalada Maligawa at the auspicious hour of 6.16pm facing North-West and proceed along D.S.Senanayake Street, Temple Road, Deva Street, Colombo Street, Yatinuwara Street and return to the Dalada Maligawa through Raja Weediya.  


Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela said all arrangements for the Perahera festival had been made and that the Dalada Maligawa was in possession of adequate resources including, dancing groups and other artistes performing in the Perahera and elephants.  


He said the Perahera this year would be a more colourful cultural pageant comprising several special features. Diyawadana Nilame requested the large crowds that would flock to Kandy to watch the grand event to refrain from the use of plastic and polythene and to focus particular attention on environmental protection. He stressed that the visitors under the influence of alcohol should not frequent the precincts of the Maligawa or the Perahera route.  


Meanwhile, Senior DIG – Central Division S.M.Wickremesinghe said special police contingents and officers in civvies would be deployed during the Perahera to provide protection to the large crowds that throng Kandy during the festival which include tourists.
