The present government does not intend to sell lands to foreigners outright, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday.

The Prime Minister said this during a ceremony held in Baddegama Galle to distribute deeds to landless in the area.

“The present Government had adopted a policy of giving lands to the foreigners on lease rather than outright sales. It was the last regime who sold the port City land even before it was reclaimed from the sea. The present regime negotiated and turned the deal to be more favourable towards Sri Lanka,” he said. “ The land where the defence headquarters was located in Galle Face was given to Shangrila Hotel while the headquarters was shifted to Battaramulla. The cost of it was originally estimated to be Rs 25 billion but it seemed now that the cost is going to be higher than that,” he added.
