HC Trial-at-Bar indicts Gamini Senarath, three others

The Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar Judges, Sampath Abeykoon, Sampath Wijeratne and Champa Janaki Rajaratne yesterday served the indictments on four accused including former president’s chief of staff Gamini Sedara Senarath for misappropriating public funds.   

The others are Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation’s former managing director Piyadasa Kudabalage, former Samurdhi Commissioner Neel Bandara Happuwinna and Lasantha Bandara. They were indicted for committing offences under the Public Property Act, the Penal Code and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.   


The accused were each released on a cash bail of Rs.100,000 with two sureties for Rs.1 million and their passports were impounded by the Court.   


They are alleged to have used SLIC funds and invested millions of rupees in ventures including the Grand Hyatt hotel project.   


They were further accused to of investing Rs.500 million of Public Funds at Helanco Hotels and Spa. The money had been originally given by Litro Gas Company to Canwill Holdings Ltd.   The court directed Deputy Solicitor General Thusith Mudalige to submit copies of the documents and the list of witnesses to the defence within a week. The case has been fixed for September 19,   
The Attorney General has listed 92 documents as production and 63 witnesses in the case.
