The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has called for a public and professionals alliance to undo the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Singapore and Sri Lanka.

Addressing a press conference yesterday GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said despite the five member committee appointed by the President to review the FTA, the Ministry of Development Strategies and International Trade arbitrarily was holding talks with the stake holders to pursue with the FTA.

The GMOA said that the FTA would severely affect the country and the future generations and it would be a betrayal worse than the 1815 Kandyan Convention.

Dr. Aluthge said it will hold strong protests with the public support to force the Government to revoke the agreement.

Meanwhile, the GMOA is to meet several professional and civil society movements to form an alliance on Thursday (30).
