Maharagama Urban Council has decided to remove the pre-school which was existing for 40 years within the urban council premises.

UC members who support the removal of the pre-school says the environment in the area is not conducive for pre-school children as very often tractors loaded with waste traverse over the area and also employees of the UC often come to this place for smoking. Under these circumstances it had been moved to shift the preschool on several earlier occasions but no actions were taken to execute the decision..

Some UC members said the Chairman initially wanted to shift the Ayurvedic Centre from the premises and establish a physical training centre for which he shows a keen interest at the place. However due to the protest of some members to shift the ayurvedic centre he had suggested the removal of the preschool to make space for the physical training centre.

JVP UC member Devananda Suraweera said despite any reason given, shifting the pre-school from its present location to Sisila Udyanaya is a good move taken unanimously as it is a pleasant area for a preschool. However the shifting will be done after all the facilities necessary for a pre-school are provided and present children would not be affected due to the shifting.

Pre-school is now planned to be relocated at a building bought by the UC 15 years ago for some millions of rupees in Sisila Udyanaya by the side of Maharagama – Boralesgamuwa road.

A mother of pre-school child said they could not understand why the UC had taken this sudden decision.

Pre-school is now planned to be relocated at a building bought by the UC 15 years ago for some millions of rupees in Sisila Udyanaya by the side of Maharagama – Boralesgamuwa road. This building had remained idle for a long time without being used for any purpose.

Most of the area residents are in favour of the new location for a preschool.

Our attempt to contact Maharagama UC chairman to have his views were not successful.
