United National Party (UNP) National Organizer and cabinet minister Navin Dissanayake yesterday said the party should safeguard its heritage and the tradition of holding secret ballots to elect its office bearers.
Minister Dissanayake who was speaking during UNP’s 72nd anniversary celebrations held at  Sirikotha, said the UNP should safeguard its heritage of being a democratic party.

“UNP is the only party in the country to use secret ballots to elect its office bearers. Secret ballot was used by the UNP to elect officer bearers thrice in 1976, 1994 and in 2011. This heritage and practice should be upheld,” he said.   Also  he stressed that rural development, engaging in politics while carrying out development work and looking after the interests of party members, will see UNP through in the future. He said party should be prepared to face elections next year.

UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said the party should be prepared to capture the state leader’s post during future elections. “Get ready to capture the state leader’s post which the party had been losing since 1994,” he told the party members.
