The government will present a draft of the new Constitution soon, House Leader Lakshman Kiriella told Parliament yesterday.

He said this when joint opposition MP Udaya Gammanpila asked him about the status accorded to Buddhism under the new Constitution.

“This can be checked when the government presents the draft of the new Constitution,” Mr. Kiriella said.

However, joint opposition parliamentary group leader Dinesh Gunawardene said the Constitutional Assembly Steering Committee had only agreed to present the latest report of the expert panel and not a draft of the new constitution.
Mr. Kiriella, responding said the government would present a draft of the new Constitution and that there was little it could do if the joint opposition opposed it.

Mr. Gammanpila said only two members of the expert panel had agreed to maintain the status accorded to Buddhism in the current Constitution.
