Strong winds that whipped through the area on Monday evening have damaged 29 housing units in the ‘Navagammana’ scheme at Digamhalmillawa in Kahatagasdigiliya, said Janaki C. Gunatilake, Kahatagasdigiliya Assistant Divisional Secretary.

Visiting the site, she said relevant officials would take immediate measures to recover the damage.

Strong winds experienced at around 6.00 p.m. on Monday, followed by heavy showers to end the prevalent dry season, have completely damaged two houses and partially destroyed the rest.

It was learnt that the housing scheme — constructed under the ‘Sevana Nivasa’ programme by the Housing and Construction Ministry — was to be declared open by Minister Sajith Premadasa in the future. However, several families that had occupied the housing units before the project was unveiled escaped unhurt, sources said.    Meanwhile, a large tree that uprooted and fell across the road leading to the Digamhalmillawa village hindered vehicular movement and disrupted the electricity supply to the area.

The victims of the incident were paid a compensation of Rs.10,000 each by the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) yesterday.
