Commission probing Srilankan Airline irregularities PCoI raises query over issuing treasury bonds to State Banks

Chairman of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) on irregularities at SriLankan airlines, SriLankan Catering and Mihin Lanka, Justice Anil Goonaratne yesterday asked Senior State Counsel Dishna Warnakula to check whether there is a provision allowing the Government to directly issue treasury bonds to selected banks such as People’s Bank, Bank of Ceylon and National Savings Bank.   

He  made this question after, AGM – Back Office, People’s Bank, Chandrasiri Fernando revealed that Deputy Secretary to the Treasury has instructed to the Director General of Public Debt Department in March, 2014 to issue the above mentioned banks treasury bonds in exchange for the SriLankan shares owned by these institution.   

Witness also revealed that the Director General of Public Debt Department had instructed the Treasury Operations Department to issue bonds which mature within 10 years for these banks on March, 2014.
